Hair falling more than usual? 6 habits to fix

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Rough handling, tight styles, heat, crash diets and low iron can push it higher. Gentle care fixes most of it. See a skin doctor for bald patches or shedding that lasts past six months.

Your comb has more hair than last month, and Dadi says "just oil it more".

At a Glance

What: Some hair fall every day is normal. More than usual often has a simple cause.

How common: Low iron, one hidden cause, affects 57% of Indian women.

See a doctor: For bald patches, a sore scalp, or shedding past six months.

What helps: Gentle combing, loose hairstyles, less heat and good meals.

GET WELL: Know what is normal

1. How much hair fall is normal?

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Most of it goes down the drain unnoticed.

Heavy shedding often starts two to three months after a shock to the body. Fever, childbirth, surgery or losing a lot of weight can all do it. Doctors call this telogen effluvium. It usually settles, and hair fills out again in six to nine months.

In India, low iron is a common hidden cause. In NFHS-5, 57% of women aged 15 to 49 had anaemia. In one North Indian study of 100 women with hair fall, 62 had long-lasting shedding.

2. Which everyday habits damage hair?

Shedding starts at the root, and the whole hair comes out. Breakage is different. The hair snaps along its length, but the root keeps growing. Broken hair looks thin and frizzy at the ends. Most habits below cause breakage, so better habits fix it.

Habit

Do this instead

Rubbing or combing wet hair roughly

Wrap it in a soft towel. Comb gently with a wide-tooth comb.

A tight choti, bun or ponytail every day

Tie it loosely and change styles. Pain means it is too tight.

A straightener or hot dryer every day

Use low heat, once a week or less.

Heavy gels, colouring or smoothening

Keep styles simple. Use conditioner after every wash.

Washing too rarely

Wash as often as your scalp gets oily.

Skipping meals or crash diets

Eat regular meals with dal, eggs, paneer and green sabzi.

Very hot water can dry the scalp. It is not a proven cause of hair loss.

3. What else causes hair loss?

  • Family pattern: Thinning that runs in families. It needs treatment to slow it.

  • Round bald patches: Often alopecia areata. The body attacks its own hair roots. About 2 in 100 people get it.

  • Hormones and illness: A doctor can check with a blood test.

  • Some medicines: Never stop one without asking your doctor.

Hair fall is common. It does not mean you neglected yourself.

4. What do Indian families often believe?

What people say

What is true

"Oil it daily and the hair fall will stop."

Oil softens hair. It cannot fix low iron or a family pattern.

"Washing often makes hair fall."

Regular washing is fine. In studies, washing 5 to 6 times a week kept scalps healthiest.

"Brush 100 strokes a day."

This is a myth. Too much brushing causes split ends.

"Onion juice or rosemary oil will regrow it all."

Rosemary has one small study. Most home remedies are unproven.

5. When should we see a doctor?

Watch at home if: Shedding started after a fever, delivery or a stressful month, and your scalp feels normal.

Book a doctor if: You see round bald patches, a widening parting, or a sore, crusty scalp. Also book if shedding lasts past six months, or you feel tired and look pale. Book a doctor

Go now if: Hair fall comes with chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting. Call 112 (India) or 1122 (Pakistan), or go to the nearest hospital. Emergency numbers for other countries

At the check-up, the doctor asks how it started and looks closely at your scalp. They may gently pull a few hairs. They may order blood tests for iron or thyroid. Bring your medicine list and any recent blood reports.

LIVE WELL: Gentle care that works

6. What actually helps?

  • Gentle care: Helps everyone, especially with breakage.

  • Time: Shedding after a fever or delivery often settles in six to nine months.

  • Fixing low iron or vitamins: Only after a blood test shows a gap.

  • Skin doctor treatment: For family-pattern thinning or bald patches. It takes 6 to 12 months and must continue.

Skip "miracle" hair supplements. Without a proven gap, they may not help. Some can even make hair loss worse.

7. Which hair oil should I use?

Oil makes hair softer and easier to comb. No oil is proven to stop hair fall.

Oil

What it may do

Coconut, before washing

Protects the hair strand during washing (some evidence)

Rosemary, always diluted

Helped in one small study of pattern thinning; can sting the skin (some evidence)

Almond or argan

Softens hair and adds shine (traditional use); skip almond with a nut allergy

Use a few drops on the lengths. Stop if your scalp itches or burns.

8. What can we start this week?

Start with any three:

  1. Wrap wet hair in a soft towel instead of rubbing.

  2. Comb with a wide-tooth comb, ends first.

  3. Loosen the daily choti or bun.

  4. Keep heat tools to once a week, on low.

  5. Add dal, eggs or paneer and a green sabzi to each meal.

Anaemia help: Government health centres test for anaemia under Anemia Mukt Bharat. They also give iron and folic acid to girls and women. Ask your ASHA worker.

The good news

Most shedding settles on its own. Broken hair grows back once the damage stops. Years of pulling can scar the roots, so loosen tight styles early.
